CONGRATULATIONS
(My Grandparents)
Who was born in slavery in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where Negroes were treated as slaves. Right or wrong they had to obey the Master (White man).
The Masters were great horsemen riding from farm to farm checking on their slaves.
When the women would hear the sound of the horsemen coming they would hide. So you can see why the race is mixed.
When Grandfather and Grandmother grew up they married and was blessed with three children, Harvey, Pink and Alice.
Years later they came to Tennessee with faith, confidence, trust and love. They believed there was a better day in Tennessee for God’s children. When they arrived in Tennessee they had a different feeling and look on life.
After coming to Tennessee he decided he would buy a homestead for the family in the Jamestown Community. He was one of the men helped to make it possible for a place of worship on the Bunton Farm. As the church began to grow, they needed a larger place to worship, they moved to a place called Indian Creek.
Later the church was torn down and moved to another location on the Batty Farm. Grandfather and grandmother were two of the guiding lights in Green Leaf A.M.E. Church. They were acquainted with the Lord. It was rough and tough in Tuscaloosa, Alabama trying to serve the Good Lord. When they got to Tennessee, they felt warm and welcome to be a part of Green Leaf A.M.E. Church. They were concerned for spiritual growth.
Later, grandfather bought a farm in the river bottom near the Mississippi River. That farm is called the Currie Jones Bottom. It is known by that name all over Tennessee. The Currie Jones Bottom will always ring in ears of black and white farmers.
For the love he had for his son, he lost his farm. His son Harvey bought some of the land before it was lost. Then, he sold my father, Amos Sherrill 15 acres from his part. After my father’s death I inherited the 15 acres from my father Amos. I will keep it in the Jones Family from generations to generations. It will always be known as the Currie Jones Bottom.
He was funeralized May 17, 1922. Don’t have the date of grandmother’s death.
I, Mary Sherrill Miller
Granddaughter of Currie & Julia Jones
